Grand Gestures Are Great, But Save The Effort And Do These Small Things Instead

You’ve heard that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but how often can you realistically surprise her with them? If you’re not a billionaire, the answer is probably “not often”. Sparkly things are great, but all a woman really wants is to feel cared for and thought about. So, instead of increasing your diamond budget, try these 10 things instead.

  1. Know her coffee order to a T. Whether it’s a single Splenda packet and a splash of cream or a half-caf, three pumps, nonfat, sugar-free vanilla latte, knowing her coffee order will get you major bonus points. When you’re out for brunch and her coffee hits the table, reach over with the cream and fill it just how she likes it. You don’t have to be married for 30 years to pay attention to small details like these.
  2. Leave her handwritten notes. I know this is so 1940 of me to suggest. Here’s the thing, though: women go crazy for handwritten notes. They’ll photograph them, post them to Instagram, then store them in a keepsake box to cherish forever. It doesn’t have to be a six-page love letter written poetically. Keep it short and sweet— I promise you she’ll melt.
  3. Fill up the gas in her car before she needs it. Filling up the gas tank is the worst. Most women love to live on the edge, riding on literal fumes only to realize on the way to work that they’ve cut it way too close. If you want to be a real hero, get up early and fill up her tank before she goes to work. It’s seriously the most thoughtful thing you can do for someone.
  4. Send flowers to her office for no reason at all. You don’t need a holiday as an excuse to brighten your lady’s day. In fact, unexpected flowers are WAY better than holiday flowers. She’ll love showing them off to her co-workers and they’ll sit on her desk all week as a reminder that you care about her.
  5. Make dinner reservations so that she doesn’t have to. After a long work week, the last thing you want to do is put on real clothes and go out to dinner. The obvious preference is pizza, sweatpants and a video game. Chances are, she wants to do this too. However, make the effort of finding a new restaurant and offer to take her out. Forward the Open Table reservation confirmation with a note that says, “Will you be my date on Friday?”.
  6. Ask specific questions about her day. It’s easy to fall into the habit of walking through the door and thoughtlessly asking how her day was, to which she’ll respond, “It was good.” Asking specific questions about her day will show that you’ve not only been listening to her but that you care enough to follow up. Even if she works on an assembly line at a peanut factory, find a way to be interested in her career.
  7. Warm up her car in the winter. Getting out of bed in the winter is the absolute worst. The only thing that a woman hates more than being hungry, is being cold. The most thoughtful thing you can do in the winter, whether you have a garage or not, is to go outside and warm up her car ten minutes before she has to leave.
  8. Open and close the car doors. Despite what they say, chivalry doesn’t have to be dead. If she’s charmed by the way you insist on walking closest to the street when strolling down the sidewalk, she might be smitten with a chivalrous man. Walk her to her door, hold the umbrella over her head when it rains, and when the day comes, ask her father’s permission before you propose.
  9. Always leave her the last bite. From road trip snacks to pints of ice cream, it’s a fact that women love food. If you’re willing to leave the last ice cream bar in the freezer, she’ll know it’s true love. Make sure to stock up the pantry with her favorite snacks and pick up cupcakes from the local bakery when she has a bad day. Better yet, bake them for her. Even if you’re not super comfortable in the kitchen, it’s the thought that counts. Besides, you can’t really screw up cupcakes out of a box.
  10. Look her in the eyes and tell her she’s beautiful. We tend to throw the phrase “I love you” around in a careless way. We feel awkward and cheesy about looking into each other’s eyes and giving an honest compliment. Do it anyway. You don’t need to have the perfect moment to stop her in her tracks, hold her head in your hands until her eyes meet yours and tell her she’s the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen (or something that feels natural coming from you). Then, the only diamond she’ll be fixated on is the one that brings wedding bells.
