The Only 10 Items A Man Needs In His Wardrobe

The old adage “look good, feel good” generally tends to prove true. Men that dress well enjoy many advantages. They’re looked at more fondly by women, they’re respected to a greater degree by their peers and their colleagues, and the difference in treatment often times leads to a boost in confidence, which in turn brings about tons of benefits that stretch far beyond the material. It’s cyclical, and this process all begins with the manner in which we present ourselves. All that begs the question: what should a man have in his closet? Here’s a list of the only 10 items you need.

  1. Chinos. A good pair of chinos goes a long way. You can dress them up for more formal occasions such as work outings, conferences, fancier dates, and weddings, or you can dress them down for a trip to the mall or a sporting event. They’re as versatile as they are stylish, and the best thing about them is that they come in a variety of colors. If you purchase a few different pairs, you’d have no trouble putting together a series of outfits, each with a different vibe, for a boat load of occasions.
  2. Plain monochromatic tees. These should be a staple in any man’s wardrobe because they look good and they go with anything. They’re comfortable, multi-functional and timeless. A few black, white,  grey, and/or dark blue tees will prove handy when you’re looking to throw together a look for a casual night out on the town in a matter of seconds.
  3. A suit. Even if you don’t wear one to work, every self-respecting man needs at least one suit in his closet. The options are vast, but I would recommend something slimmer fitting and sticking to classic colors. Black, blue, and grey suits will never go out of style. Avoid loud colors and pinstripes, though — just trust me.
  4. Chelsea boots. They’re rapidly becoming a classic and for good reason. They’re versatile, stylish, and can be worn with damn near anything. They’re another item that you can dress up or down with ease and as such, you’ll be able to wear them with a lot of different outfits. They’re bold without being flashy and have a classic feel that’s simultaneously traditional and modern, blending the two vibes seamlessly. Not to mention they’re wildly comfortable.
  5. White sneakers. Whether their Converse, ADIDAS, or Saint Laurent, a pair of white sneakers instantly add a bit of youth and flair to any look. Dress them down with denim, dress them up with chinos… any way you like it, white sneakers work. Just be careful — they can be tricky to keep clean.
  6. A white button-down shirt. I know versatility is a word that’s been tossed around a few times already, but a white button-down may truly be the most versatile item in your wardrobe. You can pair it with a suit, dress it down with jeans, chinos, or even shorts. Regardless, it’s a must-have.
  7. A denim jacket. Another timeless item and here, you have some liberty to be a little rebellious. My personal taste leans toward the more conservative side when it comes to denim jackets, and I like to keep mine rather plain. But I’ve seen plenty of guys pull off a variety of different looks with denim jackets. Whether it be their choice of a distressed denim, a crazy wash, or experimenting with some paint, verbiage written on the back, whatever — a lot of possibilities exist here. If you’re the kind of guy who likes and can pull of that more artistic vibe, all the power to you.
  8. Jeans. Speaking of denim, a cornerstone of any man’s wardrobe should be a pair or two of quality denim jeans. The brand isn’t important, nor is the wash (unless you plan to wear them to work, then the general rule is the darker the better), but what is important is the fit. Slimmer cut jeans generally look better, but everyone’s body is different. For guys with bigger thighs, I’d recommend looking into athletic cut jeans. They leave extra room in the leg without sacrificing style. The only hard no fit-wise here is bootcut. Besides that, play it by feel and comfortability. After all, you’re going to be the one wearing them.
  9. Penny loafers. Quality dress shoes are something that every man needs and nearly every pair of penny loafers manages to straddle the border between dress and casual perfectly, allowing you the freedom to wear them with a variety of outfits. Investing in a pair would prove to be a wise move.
  10. A dress coat. Whether it be a pea coat, trench coat, or some kind of functional blazer (preferably a dark blue), every man needs a fashionable coat for the colder months. All of these can be worn with either a suit or a t-shirt and jeans, and as such, you’ll get a good bang for your buck with any of these styles. Even if you don’t live somewhere where snow is something you have to think about, having a nice coat for those colder nights, business trips, and vacations will prove wise and worthwhile.
